Civilians Response to Active Shooter Events

ISFCourse Description

Law enforcement officers and other agencies are frequently requested by schools, businesses, and community members for direction and presentations on what they should do if confronted with an active shooter event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues, and considerations for conducting drills.

This course will focus on how to be prepared and gain the skills needed to prevent, recognize, and increase your ability to survive during an active shooter incident. You will also learn how to make educated life-saving decisions regarding which actions to take during an active shooter incident.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Active Shooter Events
  • Stages of Disaster Response
  • Stress Response
  • Human Brain vs. Lizard Brain
  • Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD)
  • Script & Practice
  • Active Attacks
  • Personal Issues
  • Risk Factors
  • Police Response

Who Should Attend?

This course is for everyone! The threat of an active shooter attack is rare but very real. We aim to eradicate the “It can’t happen to me” mentality and change the way people everywhere respond to active attacker situations, individuals should be prepared for active shooter events and empowered to make their own life-saving decisions. Once empowered to make their own life-saving decisions, individuals must be trained in proactive active attacker/shooter response options, rather than a passive, mandated, one-size-fits-all response. We want all Floridians to have the knowledge and skills to survive when shots are fired or a massive attack is imminent.
